Students live on board the yacht for the duration of the course as the yacht sails around the sheltered waters of Moreton Bay. This is both a training trip and a holiday in one!
Duration: 3 x weekends weekends do not need to be consecutive or 5 day Monday to Friday Previous experience required: None. Course content: The yacht will visit different harbours and anchorages during the trip and students will enjoy the delights of spending the night on board at anchor and sailing at night under the stars. You will learn how to set the sails, steer the yacht, and live aboard a yacht whilst cruising.
The course also covers the use of all safety equipment on board a yacht, the rules of the road, manners and customs, and how the weather effects the planning of a sailing trip. Students are fully involved in all aspects of crewing on board the yacht from steering to cooking in the galley. Ladies take note there is total equality on board a Southern Cross School yacht so the guys do the cooking and cleaning to! The yachts are comfortably fitted out for cruising to make this trip an enjoyable experience.
Your fully qualified Instructor will guide you through the mysteries of sailing and you will emerge from the course a competent and confident crewmember, welcome on any yacht. As cruising is supposed to be a relaxing activity there is time to take it easy and enjoy the journey with at least one evening out onshore.
From the first point of contact I made with Southern Cross the entire team was very responsive. The website was intuitive, informative, and provided detailed answers to most of my questions.
When I had additional inquiries or requests, Jenny and Di were incredibly responsive and detailed with their responses. Arriving was easy; walked into the marina and everything was clearly marked.
It was incredibly helpful for me to be able to leave my big bag at the office during the sail as I was traveling from out of the country. On the boat, Paul was simply fantastic. He began by making introductions of the crew to work to build camaraderie, followed by a thorough and detailed review of safety equipment.
Once we set out, he was very thorough in his explanations about what we were doing and why we were doing it. His style of management was well-suited for our crew; he was affable and relaxed while always instilling in us a sense of authority when he needed to act quickly. In particular, I was impressed how he would take time to support an individual who may have struggled with a concept and work to support them.
One of our crewman was struggling with a particular point of navigation and Paul knew exactly which buttons to push to instill confidence in the guy and help him get sorted. He was knowledgeable of the area and he provided clear and detailed explanations of what we were doing and why we were doing it. Thanks again for your efforts. Truly top notch. From the safety briefing on I felt confident on the boat and Steve had an air of quiet stability that put everybody at ease.
The course was well structured and when the days sailing was over we were allowed to relax and enjoy the situation. It was a great five days and I learnt that sailing is a pastime that will be taking up more of my time in the future.
I hope to be over in Australia sometime next year and will definitely be taking another course with you guys. Steve our instructor was absolutely brilliant. From his excellent instructing technique to his many colourful stories — it all added to the experience for us to have a great time. The equipment and facilities on board the Jeanneau 40 were perfect as was the on board catering. The range of locations that we visited around Morton Bay was truly eye opening — who knew this bay had so much to offer.
We would thoroughly recommend Southern Cross Yachting to any interested parties in doing the course.
